Overall Course Rating

19 / 20

A - Must Play

EagleSticks Golf Club in Zanesville, Ohio, is a standout Southeast Ohio public course that's been a top-rated destination since opening in 1990. Designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan, this par-70 layout measures 6,508 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 70.1 and slope of 120.

Built on rolling farmland with pristine woodlands, it offers a scenic, strategic challenge that balances beauty and playability, making it a favorite for scrambles and travelers. At $40–$60 with cart, it's premium value for the quality and acclaim (once Ohio's #1 public by Golf Digest). If you're near Zanesville or Columbus (1-hour drive), it's a must, elevation changes and bunkers add intrigue without frustration.

Amenities

  • Layout / Design = 5/5

Dr. Michael Hurdzan's design is a work of art, tumbling across 150 acres of hilly farmland with constant elevation shifts (over 100 feet total) and 90 strategically placed bunkers.

The front nine weaves through oak, maple, and walnut forests with doglegs and creative approaches, while the back opens with more dramatic views and risk-reward par-5s. It's accuracy-focused at 6,500 yards, favoring positioning over power—scramble teams love the variety for team shots.

Signature hole: #11 par-5, a reachable beauty with cascading waterfalls. Reviewers call it "stunningly beautiful" and "exciting," earning its past #1 public ranking.

  • Condition = 5/5

EagleSticks is well maintained, with bentgrass greens rolling true and fast (not gonna lie, had the most 3 putts all year), beautiful fairways that hold approaches, and bunkers all over the place. My only complaint would be that some of the bunkers were hard, but feel like that was more of the current weather situations.

The pristine woodlands and waterfalls enhance the polished feel, and the course holds up beautifully year-round. Rough is firm but fair, with a few bare spots.

  • Value = 4/5

At $49 to $77 with cart (18 holes), Eaglesticks is priced higher than most.

I usually throw in the rates here but they seem like the rates adjust all the time.  Check them out and see what price you like.

  • Amenities = 5/5

The pro shop is well-stocked with gear and apparel, the bar/grill is also a sports bar inside, and the driving range/putting green are free with a round. Staff is friendly and efficient, with quick check-ins. Beverage cart that is out there on the course along with a few water jugs.

  • Playing Experience

Rounds take 4–4.5 hours on this hilly, walkable course, elevation adds 20–30 yards of roll on dry days, creating fun downhill shots. Fairways are tight but fair, greens undulating but true. Wind through the woods keeps it lively. For scrambles, the layout encourages creative team decisions on par-5s.

  • Who It's For

Ideal for mid-handicappers (10–20) seeking scenic, strategic golf. Great for scramble groups or couples wanting a premium day out. Skip if you're on a tight budget or prefer flat munis.

  • Final Thoughts

EagleSticks is a scenic masterpiece that lives up to its accolades, 19/20 for the design and condition alone. It's the kind of course that sticks with you, blending beauty and challenge. Pair it with a Zanesville meal for the full trip.
